President Donald Trump took aim Tuesday at a rule that outlines the reach of the Clean Water Act, saying the rule was a "massive power grab" by federal regulators. But six attorneys general vowed to fight the rollback -- with lawsuits if necessary.

More than 100 scientists gathered recently at the University of Windsor in Ontario to discuss Lake Erie's  somewhat fragile health. And keynote speaker Dr. Jeff Reutter delivered a sober warning about proposals to dismantle the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Judith Enck, the former regional administrator of the EPA under President Barack Obama, said the new head of the EPA under President Donald Trump threatens to roll back major environmental regulations, including climate change actions and pollution protections.

The health of the Great Lakes and its watershed will be the focal point of series of meetings taking place throughout the month of March.


Researchers are refining a system to predict the strength and movement of harmful algae blooms that plague Lake Erie during the summer. The blooms can be dangerous -- fouling beaches and threatening drinking water, especially at the western end of the lake.
